DESIGN CONCEPT
The design of Kids Kottage evokes a warm and friendly feeling. The exterior facade, with a welcoming front porch and ranch house styling lends to a home-like feel to the Kottage.
Its almost square footprint provides approximately 1,500 square feet of interior space on each level which allows for a great deal of flexibility with 2 levels offering rooms for supervised visitation, interviews, family eduction, and workshops.
A small kitchen, handicap accessible baths and quiet rooms where children can feel safe and protected are all part of the Kids Kottage plan. A garden area will give children outdoor space to enjoy and to soothe away the troubles which brought them to Kids Kottage,
and the wide front porch will provide an opportunity for informal talks and visitation.
Downstairs the large meeting room/classroom will be used by both children and their parents for workshops and classes that will make families and children stronger.
Within the home-like atmosphere of Kids Kottage will be monitoring systems to allow for close supervision and recording of each activity, thus ensuring the safety and security or every child.
Observation points will allow families to spend time together in natural and comfortable surroundings.
Gilmer County Department of Family and Children Services (DFACS) will use the facility for an Independent Living Program, which is workshops for teens in foster care to help them transition to adulthood, training classes for prospective foster parents, Family Team Meetings to bring families together for the benefit of the children and for Civil Visitation with parents, siblings, and grandparents.
The State Court System would use the facility for supervised visitations by non-custodial parents of children under Court care.
All organizations would use the facility for meetings in connection with child welfare and development.
Mission Statement
Kids Kottage will work with local organizations and the court system to provide a safe and secure visitation center for the children of Giilmer County.
